TRAVEMÜNDE GERMANY DRAWS CROWDS TO SAND SCULPTURE FESTIVAL SAND WORLD 2006

Germany's fifth annual sand sculpture festival, Sand World 2006 takes place July 7 to September 3 at the Baltic Sea beach in Travemünde.

Sculptures of acrobats, magicians, clowns and exotic animals will reflect this year's circus theme. The compressed sand sculptures can withstand rain and storms with wind force 7.

Nearly 75 sculptors come from around the world to shape whimsical works, some up to 12 meters high, from 9,000 tons of sand. During the first three days of the festival, visitors can watch the sculptors work on the beach. Blind and visually challenged visitors have the opportunity to "see" the sculptures with their hands on the day after the festival closes.

The family-friendly program includes sand sculpting workshops, audio guided tours, and a large Kids World area. Evening entertainment features live music from jazz to classical, several chill out zones, movies and restaurants with beach terraces and international cuisine.
