First Nations communities, environmentalists, loggers and coastal communities, have collaborated to create a new British Columbia provincial park. Great Bear Rainforest protects 400 kilometers of sensitive western Canada coastline.
Rare Kermode bears, called Spirit bears, roam the vast wildlife reserve. This rare species of bear, identified by its white coat, is only found in the central coast region of British Columbia. The area boasts a tremendous biodiversity in plants, animals and birds.
Klemtu, a community of Kitasoo Xaixais people at the southern end of Princess Royal Island, is the best place to start exploring the riches of the area. Klemtu Tourism offers opportunities for nature lovers, sea kayakers, fishermen and visitors wishing to learn about Native culture.
Klemtu Tourism works with environmental and conservation groups, universities and scientists, to conduct research, including bear monitoring, and educate visitors about resource issues and minimum impact travel.
Bear viewing tours start in early May and run until mid-October. Fall is the best time to view bears. Sightings of the rare Spirit Bear are possible, but not guaranteed.
