CHRISTMAS EVENTS IN ENGLAND

London Zoo hosts a Christmas pantomime (a traditional comedic stage show aimed mainly at young people). "Dick Whittington and his Magical Cat" entertains audiences in a purpose-built theatre at the heart of the zoo from late December to early January.

In December, visitors to Blenheim Palace, the Duke of Marlborough's stately home near Oxford, enter through an avenue of sparkling Christmas trees. Decorations on the 12 days of Christmas theme brighten the state rooms.

Festive highlights in Shakespeare Country, Warwickshire, include a Frost Fair with an outdoor ice-rink at Warwick Castle; Christmas Fairs in Stratford-upon-Avon and performances of Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

The Georgian city of Bath stages its Christmas Market featuring more than 116 traditional wooden chalet stalls selling a wide variety of items. The market is bordered by the Abbey and Roman Baths. Carol singers, strolling players, a Victorian carousel and mulled wine add to the festivities and admission is free.

Osborne House, Queen Victoria's favourite home on the Isle of Wight, holds a Victorian Christmas with guided tours of the house dressed for the festive season.
