Manitoba Canada's first 5-star wilderness resort has opened in Hecla/Grindstone Provincial Park. The Hecla Oasis is 175 kilometers (a two-hour drive) north of Winnipeg.
The 90-room smoke-free resort has 34 standard rooms, 34 deluxe rooms and 22 suites. Guest rooms feature 32-inch HD LCD flat-screen TVs with on-command movies and satellite programs, work stations with ergonomic chairs, adjustable desk lamps, free high-speed Internet access, in-room microwaves and mini fridges, coffee, tea and in-room safes.
Fourteen of the standard rooms are pet-friendly. Radisson Resort Hecla also has a pet day spa, which offers grooming, day care, special activities for pets and on-staff dog walkers.
Driving directions to Hecla Oasis
Located on an island in Lake Winnipeg, surrounded with boreal forest, Hecla Oasis Resort is easily reached by car.
From Winnipeg, drive north along McPhillips Street, which becomes Highway 8 as you leave Winnipeg. Highway 8 ends on Hecla Island.
To reach Hecla Island, you drive across a causeway. Follow the signs for Gull Harbour, the marina. Watch for wildlife (moose, deer etc.) on the road.
Two kilometers past the causeway, you reach Hecla Provincial Park gate. Manitoba Provincial Park passes cost $7 per vehicle for three days.
Winnipeg airport shuttle
Hotel guests can fly into Winnipeg International Airport. Hecla Oasis offers a shuttle service between the airport and the resort.
Guests, who arrive by private plane, can choose from three landing strips at Riverton, Arborg and Gimli. Hecla Oasis staff pick up passengers when they arrive.
Hecla Oasis restaurants
The resort has three restaurants. L'Enoteca features the international and local cuisine of Executive Chef Stephane Pierre Thierry. Families can dine on steak, sandwiches and pizza at Rok Restaurant.
A spa café will offer healthy light lunches, smoothies and wraps when it opens this summer. Chef Thierry will also offer cooking classes.
Spa and water park
When it opens this year, the day spa and wellness centre will offer a mineral pool, Moor Mud treatments, body wraps, sports massages and lonithermie, a French cellulite reduction therapy.
Radisson Hecla Oasis also has indoor and outdoor pools, a Nordic Plunge Pool, a three-storey indoor waterslide and a Viking play ship and two waterslides in an outdoor waterpark.
Hecla Golf Course
Hecla Oasis Resort's 18-hole championship golf course is the top-ranked golf course in Manitoba. It offers tree-lined fairways, sand bunkers, natural water hazards, views of Lake Winnipeg and local wildlife.
Packages combine green fees with accommodations, breakfast and dinner certificates.
Bird watching on Hecla
Birdwatching tours go to Grassy Narrows Marsh in southern Hecla Island. Lake Winnipeg, the tenth largest freshwater lake in the world, is located at the convergence of two major migratory bird routes.
Hecla Island has more than 200 species of songbirds and waterfowl, as well as bald eagles and American white pelicans.
Things to do on Hecla Island
In spring, summer and fall, guests can kayak, bicycle, fish and hike on more than 75 kilometers of lakeside and forest trails. Wildlife sightings include black bears, wolves, moose, white-tailed deer and red fox.
Guided single and multi-day tours include the Narcisse Snake Dens, home to 50,000 garter snakes, night-time owl prowls and nature trips to Fort Whyte Alive, the Living Prairie Museum and Oak Hammock Marsh.
In winter, guests can go snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding and ice skating.
